Welcome to the Curators of Horror.
SPEAKER_01Week two. Well, episode two. I'm not gonna tell you what week it is, because for all you know, we recorded all of these episodes back in 2020. You wouldn't know. You wouldn't know about that. We might have. We might be recording them in 2022 and gone back in time. You don't know.
SPEAKER_02You don't know. You don't know.
SPEAKER_01You don't know that we're married, that we live together, that we actually like each other, that we have any interest in horror movies whatsoever. You're just taking what we're saying on face value, and good for you, dear listener, because sometimes that's how you have to live your life. Here endeth my TED talk.
SPEAKER_02I thought you were going for like you're just trying to scare the crap out of our listeners by just making them freak out right at the beginning of the curation.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for trusting us, listeners. I would just like to go on record and say that Emirates and I are married, and we do actually like each other a little bit. And we do like horror films. Yeah. Do we like horror movies more than each other? Who knows? Who knows, dear listener? Who knows? How are you? Emris, not listener. Listener, if you're if you're well, please do answer. But I am speaking directly to Emiris at this point, so Emris, how are you?
SPEAKER_02I am well. We are sitting in our dining room drinking boozy hot chocolates.
SPEAKER_01Because we can.
SPEAKER_02Because we can. And I I must say, like best boozy hot chocolate I've ever had. Thank you.
SPEAKER_01Was that a clap for me?
SPEAKER_02It was a clap for you. You made them.
SPEAKER_01Thanks. Thanks.
SPEAKER_02Really, really good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was delicious. Although I'm a little bit high on sugar now, as you can probably tell. Yes. I don't think I'm gonna be sleeping tonight. Because it's I mean, yeah, my teeth feel all weird and furry and sugar covered and everything's a little bit intense.
SPEAKER_02But I feel merry.
SPEAKER_01Merry as the day is long.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_01The days are actually getting shorter now. No, they're getting longer. So they are long days.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Hooray. Well, longer.
SPEAKER_01Longer days. Days are getting longer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01There's a light at the end of the tunnel. There's a song in there somewhere.
SPEAKER_02How are you? Before she starts singing.
SPEAKER_01No, I was about to give you a rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Style Art Express, the musical, but I didn't.
SPEAKER_02I'm so glad. So there you go.
SPEAKER_01I've saved you from that. I'm I'm okay. I enjoyed making the hot chocolates. That was a real treat. I know I said this last time, but I'm actually really excited about the film that I've picked this episode. It's a real good one. It's a real good one.
SPEAKER_02I'm excited for mine as well. I'm so excited for it. I do genuinely think that taking a bit of time off was actually really needed because it felt like we were getting a little bit stale, maybe, or like our our curating was was getting a little bit laboured. Laboured in one direction, kind of one way of thinking, and just having a bit of time away from it just helps you reconsider your decision making, and it's good.
SPEAKER_01I'm also just really excited to be watching horror movies again. I think that by the time we finished the first season, our whole life was feeling a bit like a horror movie.
SPEAKER_02I mean And so was yours probably listener.
SPEAKER_01Listener, it's it's been it's been a bit of a weird time, hasn't it? But I think, yeah, a little bit of time away, a little bit of um kitschy Christmas films, you know. We had we had quite a few of those. Has has cleansed the palate, and I am ready and raring to go for this episode. And it's a bit of a different one this time, and I'm yeah, looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_02I feel like we've watched some horror recently, that's what it is. I couldn't remember what we'd watched, and it that just came back to me. So yeah, obviously we also like to drop in a little a little mention or a little call out to any other horror films that we've just happened to watch in our own personal lives for our own personal enjoyment. And we recently watched a new horror film which is called Freaky.
SPEAKER_01We did, and it was great, it was so fun, it was really fun.
SPEAKER_02It was like I think it was one of the better comedy horror films that I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_01I would completely agree with you. It doesn't pull its punches, which I like. I don't like kind of comedy horror to not have blood and guts and violence in it because you know it it takes you out of the reality of the situation, I think a little bit. It's like if Sean of the Dead didn't have blood and guts in it, it wouldn't be as good. Do you know what I mean? Completely.
SPEAKER_02Because blood and guts are a reality of life, and but they're also like an important staple of horror, and I think sometimes comedy horror does that thing where it goes, Well, I don't want to freak people out too much.
SPEAKER_01So Yeah, you can tell when a writer has dabbled in comedy and has decided to dip their toe into horror, and then you can tell when a writer is a big horror fan and is writing comedy as well. Do you know what I mean? Like there's there's there's a line, and you shouldn't be afraid to cross it. Don't be afraid to cross it. And what I really enjoyed about Freaky is that it does have that heightened feeling of kind of 90s and naughties romantic comedy high school films. I'm talking, you know, like Never Been Kissed or Ten Things I Hate About You, that type of feel where everything has just been turned up a notch in terms of the visuals, but combined with really kind of graphic, nasty violence that's also very funny. It was a little bit um Scream Queens, the better parts of Scream Queens, if you get what I mean.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I think that's fair.
SPEAKER_01It's one of the better things that I've seen Vince Vaughan do for a while as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Uh for for those of you who don't know what the the basis of the film is, it's basically Disney's freaky Friday meets Friday the 13th. Yeah. It is fantastic. It's just a great premise. And I think if you enjoyed films like Happy Death Day, this is better than that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's everything that I wanted Black Christmas to be, but Black Christmas wasn't. Do you know? Because we were talking about that before. Is that the remake of Black Christmas, the second remake that I found out of Black Christmas was great, but didn't go as far as I wanted it to go. Freaky does, and it's kind of delightful in the way that it does it. I know that sounds like a really strange word to use, but that is that's how I felt. The opening sequence of this film, if you watch it and it makes you just feel happy, then this is gonna be a really cracker of a film for you.
SPEAKER_02There's a little bonus curation for you, lucky listeners. But I think it is about time for us to uh find out a little bit more about our next victim.
SPEAKER_00Our next victim is self-contest Horror Neil. As Cool Runnings is Neil's favourite movie, one can only wonder why he agreed to come on a horror movie podcast. After sitting through Saw, in his own words, ever since I haven't watched any horror. I try my best to avoid it. He asked our curators to go easy on him. Will your host be kind or will they scare the ever-living daylight out of him? Find out on the next episode of The Curators of Horror.
SPEAKER_01Well we got we got a horophobe this time. Yes. I love a horophobe, me.
SPEAKER_02I think I do too. It's nice having people on that feel the same as us, but it feels like we're almost like horror evangelists. Yeah. It's our job to take someone who's terrified and help them find a bit of horror they enjoy, or at the very least, scare the shit out of them.
SPEAKER_01Well, this is the thing. I I think as a previous horophobe, that my heart goes out to people who don't like horror, and I feel it's my mission to bring them over to the dark side. So that's why I kind of enjoyed it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I feel like if you've got someone that likes horror and you're choosing a bunch of different horror films, then even if it isn't the perfect film for them, which is what we're aiming for, they're probably still gonna enjoy it because it's horror. Yeah. Whereas if it's someone who is really, really terrified, doesn't like it, is really scared, or just doesn't like it, it just makes it a little bit harder and a bit more challenging, which is fun.
SPEAKER_01You have to be a bit more particular, and also I just think you have to think a little bit more delicately and look at films in a different way, which is always interesting because you know, when we're picking what films we want to watch as people who love horror, we don't think about these things. So it gives you it gives your brain a little bit of exercise, which is always fun. So I think it's about time that we reveal our next curations.
SPEAKER_02Uh okay, well, since you went first last week.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's my time to go first this week.
SPEAKER_01I'm really scared now.
SPEAKER_02I'm really scared that we've picked the same film.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh we did this for 26 episodes last season and it only happened once.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So I think it's quite unlikely.
SPEAKER_01If you've picked Little Shop of Horrors, I'm gonna punch you in the face.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You better not pick Little Shop of Horrors. Little Shop of Horrors is mine.
SPEAKER_02I'm not saying I'm never picking it, but I haven't picked it this time.
SPEAKER_01Okay, good. So But neither have I, so I'm still I'm still scared that we picked the same phone.
SPEAKER_02I don't think we've picked the same phone. Okay. I don't know. I just have a feeling.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02So, for our next victim, Neil, I have chosen 2013's The Conjuring.
SPEAKER_01Oh, interesting. This was something that I was thinking about.
SPEAKER_02Oh, really?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, that makes me feel like it's a good choice.
SPEAKER_01I do love this film as well. It's been a while. Yeah. It's been a while since I've seen the conjuring.
SPEAKER_02I've only seen this film once, and I actually on the whole prefer The Conjuring 2, which I have curated for one of our I think it was our third or fourth guest, maybe in the first season. Uh, but I've had this one on my list as one I've wanted to curate for somebody for a while, and it just it ticked the boxes I was looking for for Neil.
SPEAKER_01Interesting, considering that he's not a fan of possession. Oh well, we'll see. We'll see what happens. Would you like to know what film I picked for Neil?
SPEAKER_02I would.
SPEAKER_01I'm really excited about this film. Yeah. I'm really excited to watch it again. This is a film that I actually watched before I would consider myself to be a fan of horror. Okay. I've loved it and have done for many, many a many a year. So would you like me to tell you?
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_01I'm taking it back.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_01The first time this season, taking it back to 1996.
SPEAKER_02Oh, nineties.
SPEAKER_01With one of my favourite films that I haven't watched for a very long time. The Frighteners. Oh, that's good. That's a great choice. And I would really, really like, if possible, for us to search out the extended edition.
SPEAKER_02The director's cut.
SPEAKER_01The director's cut as opposed to the um cinematic release, yes, because I personally think that the extended edition has a lot more scary stuff in it. So if we if we can find that and source it, that would be marvellous.
SPEAKER_02Yes, of course, no problem. Anything for you, wife of my life. So I like it. It's a bit ghosty, isn't it? Ghosty pairing, yes. Yeah. It's good. I'm not quite sure how we both got there, but I like it.
SPEAKER_01I can see it. Yeah. I can see how we both got there. And I'm excited to watch both of these films, and I'm intrigued to see what dear Neil will think of them.
SPEAKER_02Then will he still talk to us afterwards?
SPEAKER_01Ah, that's fine if he doesn't. We've got loads of friends.

SPEAKER_01Well, if you are in the United States and you fancy checking out the Frighteners, um, it's currently streaming on HBO Max, HBO, and DirecTV. So you've got some options there. And to be honest, it's available to rent and buy in so many different places. Apple TV, Amazon, YouTube, Fandango now, Voodoo, Redbox, AMC Theatres on Demand. Like the list goes on and on and on. So you can definitely find this somewhere if you want to watch it in the States. If you're in the United Kingdom, it's not currently streaming anywhere, but it is available to rent and buy on Amazon, Apple TV, YouTube, Sky, etc. etc. and so forth. And like I said, it's one of my favourites, so I'd very, very much recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it before and re-watching it if you have seen it, because it's always worth a rewatch.
SPEAKER_02Well, I feel like we've gone a little bit away from our usual styles here in the sense that you've picked a lighter horror film for this guest, and I've gone for something that is not at all light.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I just felt like I really wanted to scare the pants off this one.
SPEAKER_01Well, sometimes we all need to scare the pants off people. I'm pleased. I feel like I have led you in this direction.
SPEAKER_02Sometimes people have pants on and they don't.
